Codeword
Decode a number-to-letter crossword.
Select a numbered square
What is Codeword?
Codeword is a crossword without written clues. Each numbered square stands for a letter, and the same number always represents the same letter throughout the grid. Two letters are given to help you begin. Every number maps to exactly one letter, and no two different numbers share a letter.
How to play
- Select a numbered square. All squares with that number share one letter.
- Tap a letter on the on-screen keyboard or type one on your physical keyboard.
- Use the across and down word patterns to work out the remaining mappings. The tracker shows assignments.
- Press Check to see how many code assignments are right. Hint fills one answer; Reveal shows the full grid.
How the grid works
The five-by-five crossword has three five-letter words across and three down. They share letters at their intersections. Each puzzle uses a stable shuffled A–Z code mapping, so code numbers remain consistent when you reload. Your assignments are saved in this browser if local storage is available.
Strategy
Start with the two given letters and notice repeated code patterns. A number appearing in several words can be especially useful. Try common endings, but check whether the same letter works at every occurrence of that code. If a guess forces two codes to the same letter, the game asks you to clear or change the earlier assignment.
Frequently asked questions
Can one letter have two numbers?
No. The number-to-letter mapping is one-to-one. The game rejects a letter already assigned to a different code.
What does Check do?
It reports how many used codes are correctly assigned without revealing which ones are wrong. When every code is right, the puzzle is solved.
Can I continue after reloading?
Yes, when your browser allows local storage. The selected puzzle and your code assignments are saved.
